JR Pass
Is the Green Car JR Pass worth the extra yen? 7, 14, 21 days
Is the Green JR Pass worth it? Green costs ¥20,000, ¥30,000 or ¥40,000 more than Ordinary for 7, 14 or 21 days. Extra cost per day and who should pay.
Short answer
You want the Green Car on the many long-distance trains that have one and the extra ¥20,000 (7 days), ¥30,000 (14 days) or ¥40,000 (21 days) per adult is fine with you
the official JR Pass site
On the official online store the Green Car pass costs ¥70,000, ¥110,000 and ¥140,000 for 7, 14 and 21 days. The Ordinary pass costs ¥50,000, ¥80,000 and ¥100,000. A Green Car pass holder can ride both car types at no extra cost.

the official JR Pass site
The Ordinary pass covers ordinary cars at no extra cost and is ¥20,000 to ¥40,000 cheaper. JR says most Hikari and Kodama trains on the Sanyo Shinkansen have no Green Cars.

Is the Green JR Pass worth it? It costs ¥20,000 more than the Ordinary pass for 7 days, ¥30,000 more for 14 days and ¥40,000 more for 21 days (adult, official online store). That is about ¥2,857, ¥2,143 and ¥1,905 more per day of validity. Whether that pays off depends on how often you will actually sit in a Green car, because the pass does not make every train a Green train.
This page puts the official prices side by side, shows the per-day arithmetic, lists what the Green pass does and does not cover, and ends with a short "who should pay, who should not" list. Prices and rules are from the official pages, read on November 4, 2026; this page covers what you pay and what is covered, not seat comfort. To check whether any JR Pass beats single tickets on your route, start with JR Pass price and the JR Pass calculator.
Is the Green JR Pass worth it? Prices and the extra cost per day
The JR Group sells the pass in two classes, "PASS for Green Cars" and "PASS for Standard Cars", each for 7, 14 or 21 days. The official online store prices (adult, yen):
| Length | Ordinary | Green | Extra for Green | Extra per day | Green costs this much more |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 days | ¥50,000 | ¥70,000 | ¥20,000 | ¥2,857 | 40% |
| 14 days | ¥80,000 | ¥110,000 | ¥30,000 | ¥2,143 | 37.5% |
| 21 days | ¥100,000 | ¥140,000 | ¥40,000 | ¥1,905 | 40% |
The formula is simple: (Green price − Ordinary price) ÷ number of days of validity. For the 7-day pass that is (70,000 − 50,000) ÷ 7 = 2,857 (rounded to the yen). That is our arithmetic from the official prices. It spreads the extra over every day, but you only use the pass on the days you travel, so the cost per Green ride is higher than the per-day figure if you travel on few of those days.
On the online store, the child price is half the adult price in each class, so the extra for Green per child is ¥10,000 (7 days), ¥15,000 (14 days) and ¥20,000 (21 days). For two adults on a 7-day pass, the extra is ¥40,000. (Children are aged 6 to 11 at the time of use, with the exceptions on the official page.)
If you buy through an overseas agency
Passes bought from a JR-designated agency outside Japan cost more in both classes (the official page lists these as "Exchange Order" prices):
| Length | Ordinary | Green | Extra for Green | Extra per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 days | ¥53,000 | ¥74,000 | ¥21,000 | ¥3,000 |
| 14 days | ¥84,000 | ¥116,000 | ¥32,000 | ¥2,286 |
| 21 days | ¥105,000 | ¥147,000 | ¥42,000 | ¥2,000 |
So the Green upgrade also costs ¥1,000 to ¥2,000 more through an agency than online. The official price page says prices are subject to change and that the price shown when you buy online, or when the Exchange Order is issued, applies. The reasons for the gap between the two channels are in JR Pass price.
What the Green pass covers
- Both car types. The official guide says a Green Car pass holder can ride both Green and ordinary cars at no extra cost, while an Ordinary pass holder can ride ordinary cars at no extra cost.
- Ordinary pass plus a Green ride costs extra. On an Ordinary pass, the conditions of use say you pay the Green Car charge as well as the limited or regular express charge. With a Green pass, no extra charge applies.
- Green Cars are not on every train. The JR Pass site says many of the long-distance trains have Green cars (it does not say all). It says there are no Green Cars on most Hikari and Kodama trains on the Sanyo Shinkansen, on any Kamome on the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, and on some Sakura and Tsubame Series 800 trains on the Kyushu Shinkansen.
- Gran Class is not included. Only the basic fare is covered. You pay the limited express charge and the Gran Class charge on top, on the Tokaido, Hokkaido, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines where the official route page names it.
- Nozomi and Mizuho are still out. The pass is not valid on any seat, reserved or non-reserved, on Nozomi and Mizuho. A separate Nozomi/Mizuho ticket, bought before boarding, makes them usable in set sections. Prices for that ticket are in Nozomi with a JR Pass.
- Seat limits apply. The pass itself does not guarantee a seat. On the online reservation site or at a station reserved-seat ticket machine, a reserved-seat ticket may not be newly issued if reserved-seat tickets for more than 110 trains have already been issued on the pass. The route page also says seats can be unavailable on some trains and sections because of limits on reserved seats.
- No refund for downgrading. If you travel in an ordinary car with a Green pass, the conditions say no refund is paid for the fare or other charges.
A drawback to weigh before you pay
The extra money buys access to the Green car, not a seat on every train. On the Sanyo Shinkansen (Shin-Osaka to Hakata), most Hikari and Kodama trains have no Green Car, and the Nozomi is not covered by the pass without a separate ticket. On those sections you may pay ¥20,000 to ¥40,000 extra and still sit in an ordinary car for part of the trip. Also, the Green pass is the same price whether you ride one Green train or twenty.
For a sense of scale on single tickets (not a pass upgrade price): JR Tokai Tours lists Tokyo to Shin-Osaka by Hikari or Kodama at ¥14,400 for an ordinary reserved seat and ¥19,270 for a Green Car seat, a difference of ¥4,870 each way (normal season, as read on November 4, 2026). The upgrade for an Ordinary pass holder is not that figure, because the conditions of use say the Green charge and the express charge are both payable. We did not find a readable official table of that upgrade for a pass holder, so we do not price it. See Tokyo to Osaka Shinkansen cost for all seat types.
Who should pay for Green, and who should not
These are our reading of the rules and prices above, not a promise about comfort or savings.
Green may suit you if
- you will ride many long-distance trains with Green cars on the days you travel, so the daily extra is spread over many rides;
- you want the freedom to use Green and ordinary cars without paying a charge each time;
- the ¥2,857 per day (7 days, online) or the agency equivalent is small compared with the rest of your trip budget.
Ordinary is probably enough if
- your main goal is to cover the cost of a few Shinkansen trips (the pass itself needs to beat single tickets first, which is the harder test; see the calculator);
- much of your route is on Sanyo Shinkansen Hikari or Kodama trains, which mostly lack Green cars;
- you only want Green on a ride or two: price those singles and compare them with the ¥20,000 or more extra before you decide.
Neither pass may be right if single tickets cost less than either price. A Tokyo–Osaka round trip alone does not justify the Ordinary pass, let alone the Green one (see JR Pass price).
