What is the JR Kyushu Rail Pass price? At the counter, the All Kyushu pass costs ¥22,000 for 3 days, ¥24,000 for 5 days and ¥26,000 for 7 days (adult). Smaller Northern and Southern Kyushu passes start at ¥15,000 and ¥12,000 for 3 days. This page lists the JR Kyushu Rail Pass prices and what each pass covers. Prices are adult prices, checked on November 3, 2026, and JR Kyushu says prices on its online booking service differ.

We could not find a single-fare table for Kyushu routes in text on an official JR Kyushu English page, so we do not price singles here. Instead we compare by days and coverage. For fares on other lines, see Tokyo to Osaka Shinkansen cost, and to price your own rides use the JR Pass calculator.

JR Kyushu's pass page lists the counter prices. The online booking page lists the online prices, each ¥1,000 below the counter price, and says "Currently on sale at a limited-time price" without printing an end date, so check the price shown when you book. The online page notes half price for children aged 6 to 11, but it prints no child online prices, so we list none.

There is no 5-day or 7-day Southern Kyushu pass, and no 7-day Northern Kyushu pass, in JR Kyushu's table. The 3-day All Kyushu pass is ¥7,000 more than Northern Kyushu and ¥10,000 more than Southern Kyushu for the same 3 days (our calculation).

JR Kyushu also lists a separate Mobile Pass: 2 days, ¥3,500 for adults, covering Fukuoka and Saga, non-reserved seats only.

What each pass covers

  • All Kyushu: local and limited express trains, the Kyushu Shinkansen between Hakata and Kagoshima-chuo, and the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen between Takeo-onsen and Nagasaki.
  • Northern Kyushu: the area including Fukuoka, Oita, Kumamoto, Nagasaki and Saga. On the Kyushu Shinkansen it runs from Hakata to Kumamoto, plus the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen.
  • Southern Kyushu: the area including Oita, Kumamoto, Miyazaki and Kagoshima. On the Kyushu Shinkansen it runs from Kumamoto to Kagoshima-chuo.

Not covered: the Sanyo Shinkansen between Hakata and Kokura, subways, buses and other companies' railways, JR Kyushu buses, Seven Stars and ARU RESSHA, among others. The Green Car needs an extra fee. Northern Kyushu passes do not cover several named trains (including Kirishima, Nichirin and Ibusuki no Tamatebako), and Southern Kyushu passes do not cover the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen Kamome, Sonic and Midori, among others.

Seat reservations

  • All Kyushu: unlimited free reserved-seat bookings in Kyushu.
  • Northern and Southern Kyushu: 6 free reservations each. After that, an express ticket is needed for each train.
  • Seats booked on the online booking site do not count toward the six.
  • Without a reservation you can use non-reserved seats.
  • JR Kyushu also sells a paid advance reservation (KRP Option Ticket) on its online booking site to people who bought a pass in advance online or from a designated travel agency: ¥1,000 per section for Shinkansen, regular limited express and rapid trains, ¥1,500 for design and story trains.

Does the nationwide JR Pass cover Kyushu?

Yes, with exceptions. The official JR Pass route page says the pass covers all JR Group railways, with some exceptions. It is not valid on Nozomi and Mizuho trains; use Hikari, Sakura, Kodama or Tsubame instead. A separate supplement ticket exists for Nozomi and Mizuho, covered in Nozomi with a JR Pass. For the national pass prices, see JR Pass price in 2026, and for break-even sums on the Tokaido line, JR Pass vs individual tickets.

If you only visit Kyushu, the Kyushu passes are the lower-priced option on paper: the 7-day All Kyushu pass at ¥26,000 against ¥50,000 for the 7-day Ordinary national pass bought online (see the JR Pass price page above). If Kyushu is one leg of a longer trip, the national pass has to be priced against your whole route. The national pass comes in 7, 14 or 21-day versions and has its own eligibility rules: it is for foreign tourists with "temporary visitor" status in their passport, with a separate overseas-purchase route for Japanese people living abroad.

Who can buy, and how

JR Kyushu's pass page says the pass is for non-Japanese citizens visiting for sightseeing on a temporary visitor visa, holding a non-Japanese passport and living outside Japan. Proof of temporary visitor status is the stamp or seal in the passport. Only the purchaser may use it, on consecutive days, and you carry your passport when using it.

Ways to buy: the JR Kyushu Rail Pass online booking site (credit card only, up to seven people per payment), a voucher from a travel agency (valid for three months after issue), or a designated JR Kyushu counter in Japan (cash, credit card or Alipay). You must always exchange the order or voucher at a designated station counter, with each user's own passport. Photos or copies of passports are not accepted.

Refunds, as stated: a pass bought online can be refunded by 23:00 on the first day of use with a 10% handling charge. A pass bought at a ticket office can be refunded up to one day before validity begins, with a 10% charge; after validity begins there is no refund for any reason, including train suspensions. For a voucher bought at an overseas travel agency, JR Kyushu says refund requests go to that agency.

When the Kyushu pass is not worth it

  • One or two rides. The cheapest Rail Pass in the table above is ¥12,000, and the 3 days run consecutively with no gaps.
  • A trip centered on Fukuoka city. The ¥3,500 Mobile Pass covers Fukuoka and Saga for 2 days, and the pass table above starts much higher.
  • Residents of Japan and Japanese citizens. The eligibility rules exclude you.
  • Anyone needing the Hakata–Kokura Shinkansen. It is not covered.
  • Anyone who needs buses or subways. They are not covered either.
  • Anyone who wants an exact break-even. We could not read official single fares for Kyushu routes in text, so you need to price your rides on the operator's fare search before buying.
