JR Pass vs individual tickets: the break-even trips

JR Pass vs individual tickets, worked out with official fares: three Tokyo–Osaka–Hiroshima itineraries against the 7-day pass, and the rides to break even.

Short answer

  • Your trip is one Tokyo–Osaka round trip, with day trips on local lines

    SmartEX

Two Hikari reserved seats Tokyo–Shin-Osaka cost ¥28,800 in total, against ¥50,000 for the 7-day Ordinary pass bought on the official site. Individual tickets are cheaper by ¥21,200.

  • You make four or more one-way Nozomi rides from Tokyo to Hiroshima in one week

    the official JR Pass site

Four Tokyo–Hiroshima Nozomi rides cost ¥79,040 as single tickets. A pass holder pays ¥50,000 for the pass plus ¥6,500 per ride for the Nozomi ticket, ¥76,000 in total, so the pass is ¥3,040 less.

JR Pass vs individual tickets comes down to one sum: the fares you would pay ride by ride, against the price of the pass. For a 7-day Ordinary pass bought on the official site that price is ¥50,000. Using the official fares we could read, individual tickets are cheaper for a Tokyo–Osaka round trip and for a Tokyo–Hiroshima round trip. The pass starts to win at about four Tokyo–Hiroshima Nozomi rides, or six Tokyo–Shin-Osaka Nozomi rides, in the same 7 days.

This page shows each sum so you can check it against your own plan. For the pass price itself, see JR Pass price in 2026. To add up your own rides, use the JR Pass calculator. Fares are adult, one way, ordinary car, reserved seat, normal season, from official pages we read in October and November 2026. The pass price was checked again on November 1, 2026.

JR Pass vs individual tickets: what you are comparing

  • The pass: ¥50,000 for 7 days (Ordinary, adult) on the official online store. Passes sold by travel agencies outside Japan cost ¥53,000 for purchases from October 1, 2026. In its notice of April 9, 2026, JR Group says the online price stays unchanged "for a limited time". No end date had been announced when we checked, so confirm the price before you buy.
  • What the pass does not cover: the Nozomi and Mizuho. The pass is not valid for reserved or non-reserved seats on them. Pass holders who want the Nozomi buy a separate ticket, ¥4,960 from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka and ¥6,500 from Tokyo to Hiroshima; see Nozomi with a JR Pass.
  • The single tickets: the regular fare plus the reserved-seat charge. For Tokyo–Shin-Osaka we use the Hikari and the Nozomi fares side by side. The Hikari is covered by the pass.
  • Not counted: local trains, subways, buses, airport trains and the cost of changing plans.

1: Tokyo to Shin-Osaka and back

A Hikari return trip costs ¥28,800. The 7-day pass costs ¥21,200 more. On the Nozomi the regular fare is ¥14,720 each way, ¥29,440 return; a pass holder who wants the Nozomi pays ¥4,960 on top of the pass for each ride, so ¥50,000 + ¥9,920 = ¥59,920. A non-reserved seat costs ¥13,870 each way, ¥27,740 return. For this kind of trip the pass does not pay off. See Tokyo to Osaka by Shinkansen for the full fare comparison.

2: Tokyo to Hiroshima and back

The Nozomi fare from Tokyo to Hiroshima is ¥19,760 each way, ¥39,520 return. A pass holder who adds the Nozomi ticket pays ¥50,000 + ¥6,500 × 2 = ¥63,000, so singles are cheaper by ¥23,480. The pass alone, without the Nozomi, costs ¥50,000, but then you ride slower trains, and this page does not price them, so that is not a like-for-like comparison. Even so, ¥50,000 is more than the ¥39,520 of Nozomi singles.

3: Four Nozomi rides in one week

Itinerary 3 adds a Shin-Osaka return trip to the Hiroshima return trip: ¥68,960 in single tickets, against ¥72,920 for the pass plus four Nozomi tickets. Singles still win, by ¥3,960, because each Nozomi ride on the pass costs an extra ¥4,960 or ¥6,500.

How many rides it takes to break even

For each route, a pass holder pays ¥50,000 once, then the Nozomi ticket on each ride. Every ride on the pass therefore "saves" the fare minus the ticket. The pass wins when that saving, multiplied by the rides, passes ¥50,000.

One-way trip from TokyoSinglesPass plus Nozomi ticketsRides before the pass wins
Hiroshima, Nozomi3 rides = 59,280; 4 rides = 79,0403 rides = 69,500; 4 rides = 76,0004
Shin-Osaka, Nozomi5 rides = 73,600; 6 rides = 88,3205 rides = 74,800; 6 rides = 79,7606
Shin-Osaka, Hikari (pass alone)3 rides = 43,200; 4 rides = 57,60050,0004

The Hiroshima row uses ¥19,760 per ride and ¥50,000 + ¥6,500 per ride. The Shin-Osaka Nozomi row uses ¥14,720 and ¥50,000 + ¥4,960 per ride. The Hikari row uses ¥14,400 and the pass alone. If you buy the pass through a travel agency for ¥53,000, four Tokyo–Hiroshima Nozomi rides cost ¥53,000 + ¥26,000 = ¥79,000 with the pass, ¥40 less than the ¥79,040 in singles, so the margin is thin.

When individual tickets win

  • One return trip, or two cities: a Tokyo–Shin-Osaka return costs ¥28,800 on the Hikari against ¥50,000 for the pass.
  • You want the Nozomi: the pass does not cover it, and each ride adds ¥4,960 (Tokyo–Shin-Osaka) or ¥6,500 (Tokyo–Hiroshima).
  • Your rides are spread over more than 7 days: the pass covers 7 days, and rides outside that window are paid for in full.
  • A reserved seat is not required: non-reserved seats are cheaper. For Tokyo–Shin-Osaka the non-reserved fare is ¥13,870 against ¥14,400 reserved on the Hikari. The sums above use reserved seats.

The reserved-seat charge is ¥400 higher in peak periods and ¥200 higher in busy periods, and ¥200 lower in off-season, per the JR West rule book. The shifts matter in a close case. Five Tokyo–Shin-Osaka Nozomi rides cost ¥73,600 in singles against ¥74,800 with the pass; if all five fall in peak periods, singles rise by ¥400 × 5 = ¥2,000 to ¥75,600, and the pass is cheaper.

The reserved-seat charge on the Nozomi and Mizuho is due to rise for tickets bought on or after July 1, 2027, according to a JR Central and JR West notice dated October 16, 2026. The figures here are today's.

When the pass wins

The pass wins when your plan is many long Nozomi rides in one week, as in the four-ride Hiroshima row, or when you ride the Hikari or other covered trains enough to reach ¥50,000 in single fares. It is a weak choice for one or two trips from Tokyo.
